Survival Kits for Urban, Rural, Wild (2005)

September 9 through October 22, 2005:
I Space, Chicago,
Curated by Sarah Kanouse & Nick Brown.

Stockyard Institute brought together a collection of weapons (starter pistols) as ‘Survival Kits’. The project engaged youth around notions of the necessary tools and equipment that would be most useful for self protection in the natural environment. Through exchanges about nature itself, surplus items for camping, and survivalist gear, the guns became a common denominator, marking a clear and essential action to remove themselves from the natural environment. The issue was pivoted on the comfort of the urban community and how the only remedy for being in the wild was to find a way home.
